House Members Keep Calling Rep. Eric Swalwell Out for His Relationship with a Chinese Spy
If you've been following the Judiciary or Homeland Security Committees' livestreams, you may have witnessed members reminding Rep. Eric Swalwell that he had a relationship with a Chinese spy named Fang Fang. However, whenever someone brings up Swalwell's alleged ties to the spy, Democrats typically object and request that the chair remove the remarks for being considered as "slurs." Here are a few instances of this occurring:
Given that it is likely that you’ll continue to hear about Rep. Swalwell’s relationship I thought it might be helpful to provide a little background.
The Chinese Ministry of State Security assigned a Chinese spy named Christine Fang, also known as Fang Fang, to build relationships with various politicians who the Chinese government had identified as susceptible to 'honey trapping.' Fang Fang subsequently aided Eric Swalwell's 2014 congressional election campaign by providing fundraising assistance. She also forged a personal connection with Swalwell and arranged for other operatives, including an intern, to infiltrate his office.1
Although Swalwell was not married when he started his relationship with Fang Fang, he was reportedly dating Brittany Watts at the time. Concurrently, Fang Fang was involved in sexual relationships with two Midwestern mayors. Fang Fang's activities were so extensive and successful that the FBI intervened and informed Swalwell, along with the two mayors, about their involvement with a Chinese spy. Shortly after, Swalwell terminated his relationship with Fang Fang and married Brittany Watts within a year.2
The FBI briefed Speaker McCarthy about Rep. Swalwell’s contacts with the Chinese spy and the assets placed inside his office. After that briefing, the Speaker removed Swalwell from the House Intelligence Committee explaining, "If you got the briefing I got from the FBI, you wouldn't have Swalwell on any committee."3
