Democrats are attempting to criminalize the longstanding practice of each party naming their own slate of electors
Their willing accomplices in the media are amplifying their disingenuous claims.
During each presidential election, both parties prepare a slate of electors to cast their state’s vote in the Electoral College. In situations where the vote is close, in dispute, or subject to recount the electors of BOTH parties will execute certificates and deliver them to their state’s Secretary of State to preserve their ability to claim the state’s electoral votes if their candidate is determined to be the winner.
For example, in 1960 Nixon was the initial winner of the Hawaii presidential election but Democrats had called for a recount. The recount was still underway on 12/19 when the Electoral College votes were due. The Republican Party and the Democratic Party BOTH submitted their slate of electors to Hawaii’s General Services Administrator for delivery to Washington DC. Later that day Kennedy was declared the new winner of Hawaii by 115 votes and Nixon, who presided over the senate, proposed that the Democratic electors be counted and the Republican electors set aside.
In 2020 the GOP felt as though election law changes made in several states without the approval of the legislature were illegal and certain votes cast should be thrown out meaning President Trump and not Biden would win. They had their electors cast their votes and deliver them to Mike Pence, the president of the senate, and it was his decision which slate to accept. The Vice President decided to count the Democratic votes instead of the Republican votes just as Nixon did sixty years earlier and Biden became president.
Today the Democrats want to retroactively criminalize the long-standing practice of having two separate slates of electors. Here is how the Democrats and their willing accomplices in the media are describing it:
